in this springtime of hope

just another manic monday, woah-oh-oh

January 05, 2004
Today at school was supposed to be painful for everyone involved. It wasnt in the end, it was only a very long Monday. It was long because on a normal Monday the kids have gym and art, today they didnt. The art teacher was sick and the gym teacher was snowed in somewhere.

We cant afford substitutes so there were no breaks today but thats okay. Usually having a substitute teacher is such a hassle that it isnt worth it. Id prefer to have my students all day over having someone who isnt a teacher not control them for a hour or more and then deal with their misbehavior for the rest of the day.

Have you seen Space Camp? Its an exceptionally awful movie from the eighties where children are accidentally shot into outer space but survive and return to Earth alive. Well, they have this machine that the kids learn how to be astronauts in that spins them around and they have to right themselves in it or they cannot land the Space Shuttle.

Well, that is what happens when you have children after a substitute teacher has had them. They are out of control and you have to return the classroom to a semblance of order or youre in tiny pieces from Texas to California before you can say, Jews in Space.

As a general rule Id rather be teaching my students than leaving them to someone else. At least when Im teaching my children its my fault when things go wrong especially when they go terribly wrong.
