I respectfully disagree. I think this pope is too dogmatic. Also, the teachings of Christ have nothing to do with barring women in the priesthood, divorce, contraception, or even abortion. If you claim to use the teachings of Jesus as your basis for dogma, then you have to leave those things open to interpretation, because Jesus said nothing about them. (Even though he had female followers, and there were, no doubt, ways of contraception and abortion back then, no matter how rudimentary. Herbs, for instance.) And didn't he say something about how if one's spouse offends one, to cast the spouse aside? That says "divorce" to me. No, a lot of the rules the church made up along the way have nothing to do with what Jesus actually SAID, and have more to do with reflecting the male-dominated society for which they were written--like much of the bible, actually. Personally, I think this pope is transitional. He's 78 years old, and the cardinals came very close to electing a Jesuit. That's what the church needs, IMHO, someone a little more intellectual.

P.S. You do know that Jesus was considered quite the radical liberal in his day, right? After all, he hung around with hookers and went around preaching forgiveness and tolerance and talking about how much easier it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven and all. Standing up for the poor, the weak, the downtrodden, the old, and the women folk. Good golly day, what a hippie heretic, that one!

Don't let the long hair and the piercings fool you: I'm not into that radical chic!

Pandi, Christ did teach about more things that you're listing. Anyone who has read the Bible knows that Jesus taught about the dignity of humanity and just as you're allowed your desire for an amoral world, the rest of us can hope for better.
