i totally disagree with the thing about law school. oi. law school. work retail if you don't know what to do. and also, marriage IS a happy institution. that so many people insist on being unhappy in marriage isn't marriage's fault.

Well, tradition aside, how about love? For me marriage has always been about a formal declaration of complete love and devotion to an individual. If two men or two women feel that way about each other and would like the world to recognize it, who are we to take that away or say they're not entitled to it? Just my two cents. :)

I'm not gonna touch the last part of your entry. I will stick with the "shoulds" that you listed. Should is a big guilt inducer. Because if you really wanted to, you COULD have done those things. Why didn't you do them? Probably because at the time you had one reason or another. My reasons always seem to be "because I don't want to". hehe I think sometimes we "parent" ourselves into making our "shoulds" make up for disappointments in the here and now. I try to be a nicer parent to my inner child. I don't talk about should have or would have and I always try instead to say "way to go" or "everything is/is going to be okay".

Here is the thing about tradition...tradition usually came to be tradition for a reason. Some traditions, granted, are frivolous and exist perhaps only to make life more fun. But others came to be because society worked best that way. Or it was for the greater good. Something along those lines. So you don't want to just toss out the baby with the bathwater when you poopoo tradition...(there are some images for ya) It could be that we just don't know how to justify something, or we don't remember why it came to be, but it doesn't mean that traditions are arbitrary. I would venture to say that most are not. Nowadays, people just can't be bothered to come up with the more complicated reasons. They might have to move a mental muscle or two.
