I agree with that, but many kids (in my school) who barely speak English don't seem to want to have it any other way. There are those who do try, and it's evident, but the problem to me is not that we aren't trying enough to teach them English, but that they aren't trying enough to care. I know that learning a second language is hard though, so maybe they just need time.

Well, you make a good point. I'm sure my grandparents didn't learn English overnight, and only one of them even had the opportunity to go to school at all. As for the kids in my school, our ESL teacher doesn't feel that any of them aren't trying, although some have a harder time learning English than others. She thinks that the ones who have the most difficulty probably have other learning problems, and would have had difficulty in school in their native language as well.

You bring up a valid point with the second language remark. I'm recalling the nightmare I had with high school French at the moment and it was crushing. The older you become the less receptive the brain is to new language. I hate how others are ostracized instead of helped.
