I got her when I was twelve and had her until after my daughter was born 13 years later. When a pet loves you, they love YOU for YOU and are thrilled simply because you exist; it's love at it's purest, no expectations, no human-imposed conditions. And it's hard to let that go. We grieve most for the ones we miss the most, so take the reality of that and dismiss any guilt. "Related" DOES NOT equal "relationship". Remember that.

I'm so sorry. We were just talking about that today: how you can know some people forever and it's less upsetting when they pass on than it is when a pet you've only had three years passes on - and, worse, how people who don't understand can sometimes be so insensitive about it. Losing a pet friend is, as far as I'm concerned, as traumatic as losing a human friend. I wish you didn't have to go through it, especially now when everything else is going on.
