Correct me if I am wrong, but I recall reading an article long before I was computer literate about a fellow at AOL.fr who edited the Welcome and Goodbye thingy to Waz-aaaaap and leFU and it later went out on several thousands floppy discs that were distributed around France (1996ish) :) You bring up and excellent universal point though that never seems to go away, I have even joined reputable places like the BBC and CBC for local headlines and received spam shortly after my sign up, while they promise me they wont ever send my personal info. Im beginning to worry about my CC over even secure pages now.
