You must read David James Duncan's THE RIVER WHY. There is also another book I loved entitled THIS IS GRACEANNE'S BOOK, by P. L. Whitney. P.L. also writes under the name of Polly Whitney and Hialeah Jackson, but those books are very wacky mysteries in a TOTALLY different tone than when she writes as P.L.
