Well, I will say that I think a binding factor in this nation is a common language and that is is fair to say that in recent generations that has been English. I think it's fine to speak whatever language you want but the beauty of having English as the language that we all speak in common is that it builds a bond between different cultures within the country. When an environment is created where you don't need to know English at all to get along, it is not going to lead to a cohesive people but a more segmented nation. Just my perspective which you may freely disagree with.

I agree that it is important to have a common language, but retaining the native language is important as well. Being able to speak more than one language is a huge asset to the people that are able to do it. I also would like to say that I teach in a classroom that is about 40% children of immigrants. Not one of these families came to the United States to leech off the government. They came to make a better life for their children- a better life than they had whereever they came from. Who am I to look down on that? I respect the risk that they take tremendously.

My Grandparents taught their parents the English Language. They came to this Country wanting to become Americans. I feel English should be the Offical Language, I don't feel that the Government should have Welfare available for those that are too lazy to learn the language. As for Puerto Ricians, I only shake my head at your wanting them for neighbors. I never had any experiencing prior to moving to where I'm at now with that Ethnic group, and the only comparison I have is what I see now, and it isn't good. About 10 years ago, the Mayor at the time, placed advertisements in NYC and also at Penn Station about how wonderful it was in this area, how cheap housing was and how much money a person received on assistance (welfare). Word got out, and there was a mass exodus from NYC. It is a wonderful area where I live and it would have been wonderful and benefical too them as well. But, when they moved here, they also brought all their bad habits.

Barbara, again
I couldn't remember where I was going with the above statement. Our County is now struggling with crimes that are only getting worse. Its no big deal now to hear about gangland type shootings taking place weekly on the other side of town. We're like Mayberry with a Spanish Harlem. The Police force is unable too keep up with the ever growing population and what that population brings. The city school is pushing for more and more minorities because of the Governmental grants that can then be assessed. I'm not being a bigot, I'm only stating what I see and know for facts.
