some lights seem eternal
in this springtime of hope

if you're not pissed off then you aren't paying attention

Two things are happening in the world of Spritopias this week. The first is that I am getting mad hits on What happened to Michael Vonderohe (a person I went to college with) and people are getting mad about the comment that he was a rapist.

This is the long and short of it. If you use your position of authority to coerce sex out of someone that is definitely rape. It doesnt matter if youre the President of the United States or a Toll Booth Operator. Using a position that you have over other people to get them to do things they ought not do is repugnant but when it is sexual then the ethical lapse goes from repugnant to criminal. Fixing a speeding ticket is one thing, having sex is quite another.

Teachers shape the futures of their students whether they intend to or not, theyre good teachers or not and it can be good or bad. Teachers are people that children are supposed to be able to trust. Teachers are people that parents and the community are supposed to trust. This really breaks down that trust for all of us. Even if the teacher in this situation had been a college professor and the student an adult it still would have been wrong.

I am not saying that it is impossible for someone who is in a position of authority and their subordinate to genuinely fall in love and have a healthy relationship but lets look at the facts and be serious for a minute especially when considering that the victim was a high school student.

It makes me really sad that her school and my university didnt do a background check on him and that the university let him become a teacher after what he did in college. Anyone locked up for a crime involving a minor when theyre an adult shouldnt be allowed to teach. Yes, Joanna, youre right people can rehabilitated but do you really want to take that chance with YOUR child?

Why does this bother me? It is a blight on all teachers, Lutheran teachers, and graduates of my university. He made us all look bad but not really as bad as my college made us look. Theyre the ones who make me really angry because they could have prevented all of this ugliness from going on. It should piss everyone off.
