wrong Martin Luther dude, sorry

December 29, 2003
Today in Church I was distracted again. The difference between my church at my parents house and my church at home is the people: my parents church has people in it and my church at home does not.

We sat behind a woman who was wearing a nice top, it had all of Marilyn Monroes Movie Posters (and no Tyler, Marilyn Monroe was not the fifth First Lady of the United States) but the problem is that this womans brassiere made it looks like she had a unique and terrible problem with back fat. Her mother has extremely short hair and wears a headband every Sunday, which is something that evades my comprehension. If you are not holding back your hair why would you put it on your head. It doesnt even touch her hair.

Then the homily touched on the subject of peace. We oscillate between having sermons and homilies depending on who typed up the bulletin. I was reminded that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was right, Peace isnt the absence of Conflict it is the presence of Justice. Thats why the conflicts in the Middle East cannot end: there is no Justice. There cannot be Justice in the Middle East because what is Just for Jew is not Just for the Palestinian and vice versa and the regions dynamics are religious and religions are held together by faith, faith is an emotion and emotions transcend logic.

People want to see an absence of conflict in Iraq and point to that absence in the pre-liberation regime and to the conflict riddled occupation but there is more justice today in Iraq than there was a year ago at this time. Only someone with wool over their eyes could deny that Iraq is better off now than before.

Im not a big fan of using his or her in my avoidance of sexist language pluralizing is easer to read than s/he and his or her.

Well, anyway, back to Iraq there will be peace when there is justice and in order for us to get to that goal we have to traverse that wilderness of violence and backlash from the former regime to get there. We did it in Germany, Italy and Japan. We can do it here.

The UN cannot. I have a hard time believing that intelligent people think that. The UN has come agencies that can do some helpful things but they cannot nation build. Most of the countries in the UN arent democracies. Should we put a country in charge of creating a democracy that isnt one itself? The United Kingdom did a better job than any European power in peacefully decolonizing their former Empire. Who better to have working in Iraq? The United States has the tradition of the Marshall Plan under our belt we too are qualified to help the Iraqis to a better tomorrow. I doubt that Cuba, Zimbabwe or Cambodia are well equipped to do this job.

It is also the UNs impotence that exacerbated this mess. I like how the Democratic Candidates blast Bushs foreign policy after eight years of a Democratic President without a strategic vision for the United States in the world and when they blast the President they either dont have an idea of their own, have the same idea that the President has OR has something completely unrealistic (Kucinich). If you compared what Kerry, Dean and Smokin Joe Lieberman are proposing and what Bush has done and is doing youll see the same policy but with an angry person proposing it.

Baw.

I respect that Fox News calls the Homicide Bombers that instead of Suicide Bombers. Theyre killing people not just themselves.

I wonder if Ill get in trouble for pondering the wrong Martin Luther in church?

Im at my parents house for the next couple days and their dog hates me. Read about Buddys tail and why their dog should and does hate me.
